  A FIERY CRASH INVOLVING MULTIPLE VEHICLES HAS KILLED THREE PEOPLE ON INTERSTATE 78 IN BERKS COUNTY.  THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED SHORTLY AFTER 1 P.M. MONDAY ON THE EASTBOUND SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY IN GREENWICH TOWNSHIP.  SEVEN VEHICLES INCLUDING A TRACTOR-TRAILER WERE INVOLVED IN THE CRASH.  INVESTIGATORS SAID THE TRACTOR-TRAILER WAS ATTEMPTING TO PASS A SLOW-MOVING BOX TRUCK IN THE RIGHT LANE AND STRUCK A CAR.  THAT TRIGGERED A CHAIN-REACTION CRASH INVOLVING THOSE THREE VEHICLES AND FOUR OTHERS, SEVERAL OF WHICH BURST INTO FLAMES.  THE HIGHWAY NEAR THE ACCIDENT SCENE WAS SHUT DOWN FOR SEVERAL HOURS.  NONE OF THE DEAD HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED YET.


  A MAN IS NOW CHARGED IN A MARCH 17 CRASH THAT KILLED HIS PASSENGER.  22-YEAR-OLD WALTER MITCHELL OF LOWER MACUNGIE TOWNSHIP WAS ALLEGEDLY SPEEDING WHEN HE LOST CONTROL OF HIS VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING EAST ON ROUTE 22 NEAR THE ROUTE 22 AND I-78 SPLIT.  MITCHELL'S VEHICLE CRASHED INTO A TRACTOR-TRAILER THAT WAS PARKED OFF THE ROAD.  21-YEAR-OLD WAYNE LEIBENSPERGER JR. WAS KILLED IN THE CRASH.


  QU-EED BATTS' ATTORNEY IS TRYING ONCE AGAIN TO GIVE BATTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO ONE DAY BE RELEASED FROM PRISON.  BATTS WAS 14-YEARS-OLD WHEN HE KILLED A 16-YEAR-OLD BOY AND WOUNDED AN 18-YEAR-OLD MAN IN A GANG-RELATED INCIDENT.  HE WAS ORIGINALLY SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON WITHOUT PAROLE, HOWEVER A SUPREME COURT RULING DETERMINED MANDATORY LIFE SENTENCES FOR JUVENILE KILLERS WAS CRUEL AND UNUSUAL PUNISHMENT.  EARLIER THIS MONTH, BATTS WAS RE-SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON WITHOUT PAROLE, BUT NOW BATTS' ATTORNEY SAYS JUDGE MICHAEL KOURY'S RE-SENTENCING IGNORED BATTS' AGE AT THE TIME OF THE 2006 KILLING.  PHILIP LAUER'S FILING IS THE FIRST OF WHAT IS EXPECTED TO BE A LONG APPEALS PROCESS.


  COMMONWEALTH COURT IS UPHOLDING RULINGS BY THE STATE LIQUOR CONTROL BOARD AND A LEHIGH COUNTY JUDGE THAT PROHIBIT CROCODILE ROCK FROM SELLING ALCOHOL.  THE LCB NIXED CROCODILE ROCK'S LIQUOR LICENSE BECAUSE OF SEVERAL FIGHTS AND NUMEROUS LIQUOR CODE VIOLATIONS AT THE DOWNTOWN ALLENTOWN BUSINESS.  THERE'S NO WORD YET ON WHETHER CROCODILE ROCK'S OWNER WILL APPEAL TO THE STATE SUPREME COURT.


  THE FINAL DEBATE AMONG FOUR DEMOCRATS SEEKING THE PARTY'S NOMINATION TO TAKE ON REPUBLICAN GOV. TOM CORBETT IN THE FALL VEERED BETWEEN RESPONSES TO POLICY QUESTIONS, AND EFFORTS TO BEND ANSWERS INTO ATTACKS ON THE FRONT-RUNNING FIRST-TIME CANDIDATE TOM WOLF.  MONDAY NIGHT'S HOUR-LONG DEBATE AT DREXEL UNIVERSITY WAS THE CANDIDATES' LAST, COMING EIGHT DAYS BEFORE PENNSYLVANIA'S MAY 20 PRIMARY ELECTION.  IT WAS IN FRONT OF THEIR BIGGEST TV AUDIENCE YET: DREXEL SAYS 22 RADIO AND TV STATIONS WERE CARRYING THE DEBATE LIVE.  AS HE HAS IN EVERY DEBATE IN THE PAST MONTH, BUSINESSMAN WOLF FENDED OFF ATTACKS BY STATE TREASURER ROB MCCORD AND CONGRESSWOMAN ALLYSON SCHWARTZ STARTED. FORMER ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION SECRETARY KATIE MCGINTY CONCENTRATED HER ATTACKS ON CORBETT.  CORBETT HAS NO PRIMARY CHALLENGER, BUT HIS POPULARITY IN POLLS IS STUBBORNLY LOW.


  A STUDENT WOUNDED DURING A MASS STABBING AT HIS PENNSYLVANIA HIGH SCHOOL LAST MONTH HAS BEEN DISCHARGED FROM THE HOSPITAL.  FORBES HOSPITAL SAID IN AN EMAILED STATEMENT THAT CONNOR WARWICK WAS RELEASED MONDAY EVENING.  HE HAS BEEN HOSPITALIZED SINCE THE APRIL 9 ATTACKS AT FRANKLIN REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL OUTSIDE OF PITTSBURGH.  FORBES HOSPITAL SAID ONE STUDENT REMAINS IN FAIR CONDITION.  SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD ALEX HRIBAL IS CHARGED AS AN ADULT WITH 21 COUNTS OF ATTEMPTED HOMICIDE AND AGGRAVATED ASSAULT AND A SCHOOL WEAPONS VIOLATION.  POLICE SAY HE ATTACKED STUDENTS AND A SECURITY GUARD IN A HALLWAY JUST BEFORE THE MORNING BELL.


  MORE THAN 260 EMPLOYERS SURVEYED BY THE BETHLEHEM-BASED NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF COLLEGES AND EMPLOYERS SAY THEY WON'T BE HIRING INTERNS AT THE SAME LEVELS AS BEFORE.  KENNETH TSANG SAYS ONE REASON WHY IS INTERN SALARIES NOT RISING MUCH IN RECENT YEARS.  "A LOT OF PROSPECTIVE INTERNS ARE SAYING 'MAYBE I WON'T TAKE ON THIS INTERNSHIP BECAUSE I CAN MAKE MORE MONEY GOING BACK HOME AS A BARTENDER OR A WAITER WORKING AT MY OLD SUMMER JOB THAT I USED TO HAVE'," TSANG SAYS.  OVERALL INTERN HIRING THIS YEAR IS EXPECTED TO FALL 3.4 PERCENT.  IT'S THE FIRST NEGATIVE GROWTH YEAR SINCE 2009 AND ONLY THE THIRD SINCE 2004.


  NEW JERSEY LAWMAKERS HAVE PASSED A BILL THAT WOULD OUTLAW AMMUNITION MAGAZINES THAT HOLD MORE THAN 10 ROUNDS.  THE STATE SENATE VOTED 22-17 ON MONDAY TO PASS THE BILL.  ANOTHER VERSION CLEARED THE ASSEMBLY IN MARCH, BUT IT WILL TAKE A NEW VOTE IN THAT CHAMBER TO SEND IT TO GOV. CHRIS CHRISTIE.  THE REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR SIGNED MANY OF THE FIREARMS BILLS INTO LAW LAST YEAR. BUT HE ISSUED CONDITIONAL VETOES OF SOME OF THE MORE CONTENTIOUS ONES, INCLUDING A BAN ON .50-CALIBER RIFLES.  ADVOCATES SAY THE LIMIT ON THE CAPACITY FOR AMMUNITION MAGAZINES COULD MAKE MASS SHOOTINGS LESS DEADLY.  GUN RIGHTS SUPPORTERS SAY IT WOULD MAKE IT HARDER FOR CITIZENS TO PROTECT THEMSELVES AND COULD HAVE THE EFFECT OR BANNING CERTAIN GUNS.


  A NEW JERSEY MAN IS CONSIDERING SUING FOR THE RIGHT TO USE MEDICAL MARIJUANA IN AN ATLANTIC CITY CASINO.  LAWYER MICHELLE DOUGLASS SAYS THAT REVEL CASINO HOTEL FAILED TO ACCOMMODATE DANIEL PRICE'S DISABILITY WHEN A SECURITY GUARD TOLD HIM HE COULD NOT TAKE HIS MARIJUANA INTO THE CASINO LAST MONTH.  THE 23-YEAR-OLD ATLANTIC CITY RESIDENT IS A REGISTERED MEDICAL MARIJUANA PATIENT.  HE USES THE DRUG TO TREAT SEIZURES AND IRRITABLE BOWEL DISEASE.  STATE GUIDELINES ENCOURAGE PATIENTS TO SMOKE CANNABIS AT HOME.  BUT THEY ARE NOT BARRED BY LAW FROM USING IT IN PRIVATE BUSINESSES.  REVEL, LIKE ALL ATLANTIC CITY CASINOS, HAS A SMOKING AREA.  THE CASINO IS NOT COMMENTING ON THE ISSUE.  NO LAWSUIT HAS BEEN FILED, SO FAR.


  OFFICIALS PLAN TO BUY NEW FANS TO HELP KEEP THE AIR CLEAN IN THE ATLANTIC CITY TUNNEL.  THE TUNNEL LINKS THE ATLANTIC CITY EXPRESSWAY WITH MARINA DISTRICT CASINOS.  SOUTH JERSEY TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY SPOKESMAN KEVIN REHMANN SAYS THE AGENCY PLANS TO BUY THREE TO FIVE FANS TO REPLACE ONES DATING TO THE TUNNEL'S CONSTRUCTION IN 2001.  REHMANN SAYS CORROSION IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM.  ELECTRONIC SENSORS ACTIVATE THE FANS WHEN EXHAUST FUMES BUILD UP.
